A new report says the Federal Emergency Management Agency faces a "high risk of future environmental liability" if it continues to use the controversial Old Gentilly Landfill in New Orleans. The report, commissioned by FEMA from a private company, questions the safety and stability of the landfill that is receiving the biggest share of the debris left by Hurricane Katrina.  Full Story


Landfill dumping to slow under deal - But new proposed site is near wildlife refuge

The dumping of construction debris at a recently reopened city-owned landfill in eastern New Orleans will be drastically pared, thanks to a series of developments this week. But plans are progressing to open a new construction landfill on a nearby property that abuts the Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Reserve, a location previously rejected as a landfill site.
