GUTTING:
This process involves the complete removal of personal contents from
the home. Depending upon the extent of the damage, walls,
ceilings, flooring and windows are also removed. The photos on
the right show examples of various scenarios. In some cases,
some savings can be obtained by salvaging areas above the waterline.
Once
gutting is complete, a thorough inspection for additional damage
that may have been hidden, should be conducted. Items such as
broken studs or beams must be repaired before proceeding further.
Also, an inspection of the foundation, both in and around the home
should be conducted. Wash-out, settling and cracked slabs are
items of concern. Additional relief from your insurance
company may be in order for this newly discovered damage.
Mold is also a major
area of concern. The remaining structure should be cleaned and
treated to remove and retard the growth of mold. There are
several mold remediation contractors and processes available.
A careful review and selection based on your home's condition is
recommended.
Many homeowners and
contractors have already began and/or completed the gutting process
- from which you can seek advice.
