CITY ANNOUNCES ZONING PUBLIC MEETINGS

Citizen Input Sought In Series of Meetings This Month

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced a series of public meetings that will begin this month to gain feedback on the City’s draft Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance (CZO) which became available to the public in July.

As a key tool in implementing land use policies in the City’s Master Plan, zoning establishes rules for determining where new development can be located. Additionally, zoning specifies where buildings can be placed on lots, controls the height and size of buildings, and provides guidance for determining how existing homes, businesses, and other buildings can be enlarged or altered.

“This important document reflects the changes that have taken place in our City and will help guide our rebuilding efforts,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “We’re in the final stretch of finalizing the ordinance and we want citizens to take a look at it and tell us what they think.”

Craig Mitchell, chairman of the City Planning Commission, agrees: “The proposed Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance is the actionable link to the policies expressed in the Master Plan.  Designed to be user friendly and intuitive, the new CZO is one of the many steps the City of New Orleans is taking to shape its future.  Public participation in this chapter of our history is not only welcomed, it is crucial.”

A series of public meetings will be held September 12-27 to discuss the CZO and receive feedback from the community.  At each meeting, a presentation will be made 30 minutes after the doors open.  The public will be able to view draft zoning text and maps, meet with city planners and submit written comments.  The draft CZO is available on the city’s website at cpc.nola.gov .
